Indian Army Enrolls One Lakh Agniveers
  • One lakh Agniveers joined Indian Army.
  • Agniveers wear same uniform, perform duties.
  • Recruitment process ongoing, 50,000 vacancies.

The Indian Army has successfully enrolled one lakh Agniveers, with around 70,000 of them already deployed to units across the country. This significant recruitment initiative, known as the Agnipath scheme, is transforming the structure of the Indian armed forces. Lt Gen C B Ponnappa, Adjutant General of the Indian Army, stated that all Agniveers, including the approximately 200 women who have joined, wear the same uniform and perform the same duties as regular soldiers. This integration ensures that Agniveers are fully integrated into the army's operational and professional structures, contributing equally to its missions.

The recruitment process remains ongoing, with around 50,000 vacancies currently available for the year 2024-25. The Indian Army's commitment to attracting and integrating Agniveers is evident in the comprehensive training and opportunities provided to them. Their performance in units has been lauded, demonstrating their readiness and competence in fulfilling their roles.

The success of the Agnipath scheme has extended beyond the Indian Army, with other paramilitary forces like the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and the Border Security Force (BSF) implementing special recruitment initiatives for ex-Agniveers. The CISF, for example, has reserved ten percent of its constable positions for ex-Agniveers and is offering them relaxation in the Physical Efficiency Test, reflecting the value placed on the skills and experience gained during their service in the army.
