The tragic deaths of three UPSC aspirants in Delhi due to flooding in a basement coaching centre has sparked a wave of action against illegal coaching facilities operating in basements across the city. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been actively sealing such centres, with one of the most prominent closures being that of Drishti IAS, a renowned coaching institute run by educator Vikas Divyakirti. The Drishti IAS centre in Mukherjee Nagar was sealed for violating building regulations by using the basement, intended for storage, to conduct classes.
The MCD's crackdown on unlicensed businesses and illegal structures has been swift and decisive, with bulldozers deployed to remove illegal structures obstructing storm drains in Old Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar. This action was taken in response to criticism leveled at the MCD for alleged negligence in maintaining floodwater drains, which contributed to the fatal flooding incident. To address the public outcry, the MCD has taken disciplinary action against two officials from the maintenance department in Karol Bagh Zone, dismissing one junior engineer and suspending an assistant engineer.
The tragedy has highlighted the precarious conditions faced by UPSC aspirants in Delhi, many of whom rely on affordable coaching centres often located in basements. The incident has also raised serious concerns about building safety regulations and the need for strict enforcement. The MCD's ongoing crackdown on illegal coaching centres is a step in the right direction to ensure the safety of students and prevent future tragedies. However, the larger issue of affordable housing and educational opportunities for UPSC aspirants remains unresolved, and the government needs to address these fundamental challenges to prevent similar tragedies from recurring.
