A tragic incident unfolded at a coaching centre in Delhi on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of three students. The incident occurred when heavy rains led to severe waterlogging in the area, flooding the basement of Rau's IAS Study Circle. The basement, which was being used as a library in violation of regulations, became trapped by the rising water, claiming the lives of Tania Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Navin Delvin (28).
A video captured prior to the recovery of the students' bodies shows a frantic scene as students rushed out of the flooded basement. A man can be heard urging them to escape quickly, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The authorities received a call about the waterlogging around 7 pm on Saturday and initiated a seven-hour long rescue operation to recover the bodies of the deceased students.
Local residents blamed the poor drainage system in the area, pointing to clogged drains that overflowed during the heavy rains. Investigations have revealed multiple lapses on the part of the coaching centre's owner and the civic authorities. The coaching centre had obtained a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the fire department by falsely representing the basement as a store room. However, the institute was using the basement as a classroom and library, violating the terms of the NOC.
The Delhi Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) and arrested the owner and coordinator of the coaching centre, charging them with culpable homicide. The incident has sparked outrage among students and the wider community, with protests demanding justice for the deceased students and accountability for those responsible. The tragedy underscores the importance of adhering to safety regulations and the need for improved infrastructure to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
