The tragedy unfolded in Delhi's R.A.U.S. IAS Study Circle coaching center where a sudden deluge of rainwater claimed the lives of three aspiring civil servants. The incident occurred on a Saturday evening, around 7:30 PM, as heavy rains lashed the city. The basement, converted into a library, became a watery grave, trapping students inside. The force of the floodwaters was so intense that it took only two minutes for the basement to be filled to a depth of 10 to 12 feet, leaving those inside with little chance of survival.
The coaching center, located in the Old Rajendra Nagar area, had a biometric system installed at the entrance. It is believed that the combination of the flooding and the subsequent power outage led to the system's failure, preventing students from escaping. Adding to the tragedy, reports emerged that despite desperate calls for help from trapped students, emergency responders arrived late and faced challenges due to the sheer volume of water. The delay in rescue efforts contributed to the unfortunate loss of life. The victims, Tanya Soni, Shreya Yadav, and Naveen Delvin, were all 25 years old and dedicated to their pursuit of civil service careers. They came from different parts of India, each with their own dreams and aspirations. The suddenness of the tragedy shocked their families and friends, leaving them grappling with grief and loss.
The owner of the coaching center, Abhishek Gupta, and his co-coordinator were arrested by the Delhi Police. An investigation revealed that Abhishek had illegally converted a storage room in the basement into a library, violating building regulations. The building's plan, approved by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in 2021, stipulated that the basement should be used for parking and storage, not as a library. This revelation further underscores the negligence and disregard for safety that led to the tragic deaths. Despite the loss of life, the owners have attempted to deflect responsibility, claiming cooperation with the police investigation. The tragic incident has highlighted the precarious state of safety in coaching centers, particularly those operating in basements, where the lack of proper planning and safety measures pose serious risks.
The families of the victims expressed anger and frustration over the lack of communication and the denial of access to their loved ones' bodies. They claimed they were only notified of the tragedy through news reports and were not allowed to see the bodies of their deceased children. This added to their anguish and sparked protests from students and friends of the victims who demanded accountability and justice. Students blocked a nearby metro station, leading to clashes with police who subsequently detained some individuals. The incident has spurred calls for stricter regulations and enforcement of safety standards in coaching centers across the city, highlighting the need to prioritize the well-being of students and prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.
