Stephen Fleming Emerges as Potential Successor to Rahul Dravid as India Head Coach
  • BCCI considers Stephen Fleming as a potential successor to Rahul Dravid as head coach for all three formats.
  • Fleming's success with CSK and his ability to develop players are among the reasons for his consideration.
  • The BCCI's condition for the coach to be available for 10 months a year may deter Fleming from applying.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering former New Zealand captain and current Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming as a potential successor to Rahul Dravid. The BCCI is on the lookout for a new head coach for the Indian men's team after the T20 World Cup in Australia next month.

Fleming has been head coach of CSK since 2009 and has guided the franchise to five Indian Premier League (IPL) titles and two Champions League trophies. He is also the head coach of Southern Brave in The Hundred, Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, Joburg Super Kings in SA20, and Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket. Fleming's success with CSK and his ability to develop players are among the reasons for his consideration.

However, the BCCI's condition for the new head coach to be available for 10 months a year may deter Fleming from applying. Fleming is a globe-trotting T20 coach and is likely to have a busy schedule in July with the MLC and The Hundred running simultaneously for a week. He is also the preferred choice of CSK management, who want him to extend his stay with the franchise.

The BCCI is also believed to be considering other overseas coaches involved with IPL teams, but they are also reluctant to take up the India job due to the demanding schedule. Dravid, who was given a six-month extension post the 50-over World Cup in October-November, has his contract expiring after the T20 World Cup next month. The former India captain has the option of re-applying for the post.

The BCCI has set key parameters for the new head coach, which include developing a world-class cricket team that delivers sustained success in all conditions and formats, having overall responsibility for the performance and management of the India Men's team in all three formats of the game, and leading a team of specialist coaches and support staff and being responsible for defining their roles, performance and ongoing development.
