Maitri Setu, Agartala-Akhaura Rail Link to Become Operational Soon: Tripura CM

Maitri Setu, a bridge over the Feni River connecting Sabroom in South Tripura with Ramgarh in Bangladesh, and the Agartala-Akhaura rail link are set to become operational soon, according to Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha. Both projects were inaugurated in 2021 and 2023, respectively, but have not yet been opened to the public.

Saha stated that the upcoming formation of a new government and the continued emphasis on the Act East Policy and HIRA model by Prime Minister Narendra Modi will facilitate the operationalization of Maitri Setu. He also noted that the trial run of the Agartala-Akhaura railway link has been completed and that it is expected to be operational soon.

The Chief Minister expressed optimism about the future of Tripura, stating that improved rail connectivity will reduce travel time to Kolkata. Anil Kumar Khandelwal, Member Infrastructure of the Railway Board, inspected the Nischintapur railyard to assess the ongoing work on the Agartala-Akhaura railway project.

The Land Ports Authority of India Manager in Agartala, Debasish Nandi, indicated that Maitri Setu is ready to open for passenger movement in the initial phase, with all necessary facilities in place at the Sabroom Land Custom Station. The final date for the commencement of passenger movement will be determined through discussions between India and Bangladesh.

The operationalization of Maitri Setu and the Agartala-Akhaura rail link is expected to enhance connectivity between India and Bangladesh, boost trade and tourism, and contribute to the overall development of the northeastern region of India.
